KUPUNA SOFTBALL

Senior softball players island wide are gearing up for the start of the 2009 Kupuna League softball season. The league has gone to a new East / West format, splitting the 22 teams geographically. The first half, which runs from Feb 21 thru May 23, is inter-divisional, the second half, June 6 thru June 27, will be four dates against seeded opponents from the “other” side. There is a post-season island tournament in Kona at the Old “A” July 14 thru 16.  The season concludes with the state tournament, Aug 4 thru 6, on Oahu this year.

Kona Gold, last year's Big Island champs, open against Kohala in Hawi. West Side travels to Honoka'a for games against Hamakua, Hamakua Coast will be in Waimea vs Pu'ukapu, Pueo stays in Honoka'a to play Ka Nani O Honoka'a, and the Kona Warriors host Kipu'upu'u.  The Waimea Paniolos have an opening day bye.  All dates are double-headers, with the first game starting at 9am (10am in some locations).  Complete schedules and results for both sides of the island can be found on-line at www.kupunasoftball.com (thanks to Bill Graham from Kohala).

Hawaiian Pride, an all star team of 65 and over Big Islanders (OK, a few from Oahu) led by Danny Ayala, went to Florida last month and won a national title in the super-major division. We are all very proud....

This year, in addition to the 60 and over Saturday league, there is an effort to get a 70+ league started. This would give older players more opportunity to participate.  Kerry Crosson, the organizer, hopes to attract enough players to have four teams, two from Hilo, and one each from Hamakua and Kona/Waimea. The games would be on Wednesdays at a central location in Honoka'a. Those who participate will still be allowed to play with their regular teams on Saturday. If you are interested in playing, coaching, umpiring, or just cheering from the stands, please contact Kerry at 329-0101.

Kupuna softball is run by the Elderly Activities division of the Parks & Rec department.  It is for players 60 and over (wahines welcome). Contact your local P & R office to find out about teams in your area.  If you want to see if you still got it, the Kona Gold have open practice every Tues & Thurs at 8:30am at the Old “A”.  Come out and chase a ball, swing a bat, and enjoy the feeling of being young again.
