BYU-HAWAII WOMEN BIG WINNERS IN FALL PACWEST SEASON, CHASE FOR HOOPS TITLE BEGINS

By Commissioner Bob Hogue
When the University of Hawaii at Hilo secured the PacWest Commissioner’s Cup last year, they had to wait until the final day of the final competition last spring to clinch the award ahead of runner-up BYU-Hawaii.

This year, the Seasiders appear to remember their last-second loss of the coveted trophy—and they have made a real statement at the beginning of the 2008-09 PacWest fall sports season. In unprecedented fashion, all three of the BYU-Hawaii women’s teams this fall won conference championships.
First, the Seasiders’ women’s cross country squad took home the title in the Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Championships at Turtle Bay Resort. BYU-Hawaii’s Amanda Whitford also won the individual title on her way to eventually gaining a berth in the NCAA national championships.
Second, the Seasiders wrestled away the PacWest women’s volleyball title from defending champion UH Hilo. BYU-Hawaii won its first twelve games in securing the title and the conference’s automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. UH Hilo finished a strong second and led the west region with 21 total regular season victories.
And third, the Seasiders won the incredibly competitive women’s soccer race on the final day of the conference season. With UH Hilo and Dixie State still in the hunt for the championship, BYU-Hawaii outkicked Notre Dame de Namur to win their second straight PacWest title. Dixie State finished second and UH Hilo third.
Those three conference titles give BYU-Hawaii a strong lead in the early point totals in the chase for the Commissioner’s Cup.
On the men’s side, Notre Dame edged out a crowded field in men’s soccer. The Argonauts beat BYU-Hawaii on the final day of the regular season to finish one point ahead of runner-up HPU. The men’s soccer race had no less than four teams in the title chase going into the final week, including defending champion Grand Canyon and UH Hilo.
For the second straight year, Hawaii Pacific won the Hawaiian Airlines PacWest men’s cross country championship. The individual winner of the event was Edward Kibet of Academy of Art.
With five sports wrapped up, the attention now switches to the two primary sports of the winter season—men’s and women’s basketball. Chaminade won the men’s title last year, while Grand Canyon took home the women’s championship. This year’s winners will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament—a first for the women’s teams in the PacWest.
BYU-Hawaii was the pre-season pick of the coaches to finish first on the men’s side. Grand Canyon took that honor on the women’s side. The reality, however, is that every team is in the hunt in a race that might not be decided on both sides until the final week of the season.
Several PacWest basketball games will be televised this winter, including a national telecast by CBS-TV of Chaminade and Dixie State on January 3, 2009. Five games involving Hawaii schools—Chaminade, BYU-Hawaii, HPU, and UH Hilo—will be televised from January through March on OC16.

PACWEST EXPECTING ANOTHER EXCITING YEAR!

By Commissioner Bob Hogue

The University of Hawaii at Hilo won the Commissioner's Cup in my first year as Commissioner of the PacWest.  The battle for the coveted trophy went down to the final day of the final competition during the 2007-08 sports season.  It couldn't have been more exciting!

Going into the spring season, UH Hilo and BYU-Hawaii were virtually tied for the points lead--with points awarded based on final standings in the conference races.  The Vulcans had won the women's volleyball and women's cross country titles, while the Seasiders had won women's soccer and finished as runners up in men's basketball.  Then, in the spring, BYU-Hawaii added another women's tennis title to its resume.

When Hilo finished ahead of BYUH in the softball standings, that left it up to the best scoring team in the men's golf championships--as the Cup standings were still tied!  The Seasiders had the edge of hosting the tournament at the nearby Turtle Bay Golf Resort.  But after a slow start, the Vulcans charged from third place into title contention on the final day.

Then, on the final hole of play, Hilo's Zady Ari chipped in from nearly 80 yards off the green to win the individual title.  That incredible finish also put an exclamation point on the Vulcans come-from-behind victory over defending champion Grand Canyon for the team title, and also clinched the Commissioner's Cup for UH Hilo.

The same kind of excitement and competition can be expected this year.  The added prize is that the winner's of almost every sport will get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournaments.  That's a huge incentive.

UH Hilo is the pre-season favorite in women's volleyball after an undefeated conference run last year, but expect this year's conference race to be much tighter than a year ago.  Hilo should probably join NDNU, BYU-Hawaii, Dixie State, and HPU as title contenders in women's soccer, while nationally-ranked Grand Canyon is the prohibitive favorite in men's soccer.  The men's and women's cross country titles should once again be a chase amongst three Hawaii schools--Hilo, BYUH, and HPU.  Notre Dame de Namur also has a strong men's team.

And that's just the Fall season.  More exciting action in men's and women's basketball, softball, baseball, tennis and golf is still ahead.

For sure, it should be a great year and a great race for who wins the Commissioner's Cup in 2008-09.

On behalf of the Pacific West Conference, I welcome you to our featured placement on the Hawaii Sports page.  As Commissioner of the PacWest, I thoroughly enjoyed my first year in the conference, especially the travel to our great schools--University of Hawaii at Hilo, BYU-Hawaii, Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific, Notre Dame de Namur, Dixie State, and Grand Canyon.  I'm also excited that we had added a school in the Bay Area--San Francisco Academy of Art University--and we are expecting to add another school shortly, all in time for the 2009-2010 season.

This past year, we had great competition in ten conference sports--women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, softball, women's tennis, and men's golf.  Next year, we add baseball as a conference sport to raise our total number to 11.

I personally want to congratulate the University of Hawaii at Hilo for winning the inaugural Commissioner's Cup for superior athletic achievement in 2007-2008.  The Vulcans won three conference titles during the year--women's volleyball, women's cross country, and men's golf--to secure the trophy.
Thanks for your interest in the PacWest.  For updated coverage, schedules, and standings, see our website at Pacific West Sports.

Aloha,

Bob Hogue
PacWest Commissioner
