| New hockey season begins Monday West Hawaii Hockey is beginning its competitive in-line hockey season Monday at the skating rink at Old Kona Airport Park. The league is open to anyone from 5 years old and up. Camp Honokaia benefit golf tourney Nov. 22 The Golf Tournament for Camp Honokaia will be held Nov. 22 at the Hapuna Prince Golf Course.
The two-person, best ball tournament, which will feature most accurate drive and greenie contests, tees off at 8:30 a.m. The tourney is a benefit for Camp Honokaia, which is located on 238 acres of densely wooded land and consists of nine campsites. Organizers say Camp Honokaia is showing its age and the Boy Scouts need funds to improve its camping facilities to face the growing needs of their scouts.

PIAA seeks football videos to distribute Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance is seeking videos from high school football players and coaches to distribute at January's 86th annual American Football Coaches Association conference, in Nashville, Tenn.
This will be the fifth year PIAA has attended this event. Last year, PIAA handed out over 4,000 DVDs for over 100 Hawaii and American Samoa athletes to college coaches at all levels from around the country.

WHEA Golf Tournament scheduled for Nov. 29 The West Hawaii Explorations Academy Golf Tournament will take place at 7 a.m. Nov. 29 at the Kona Country Club's Ocean Course. HI-PAL basketball tourney Dec. 12 in Hilo The Hawaii Isle Police Activities League will hold its 28th annual Winter Basketball Classic Dec. 26-29 in Hilo.

Flag football league to begin The 9th East Hawaii Flag Football League will start on Saturday, Oct 18, at the Hilo Bayfront Field. Games will be played Saturday mornings, with the season ending Dec. 20.
EHFFL is looking for referees and three or more new teams as well as individual players for existing teams, a spokesman said.
The EHFFL is open to individuals age 17 and older.
"We play semi-contact, nine-man ineligible (center and guards) format," a spokesman said.
Team "Puna" hopes defend its title this year. Registration fees are $35 per player. EHFFL has many safety rules and is fully officiated and sanctioned by the Metro Competitor Flag Football Union.
There will also be a kids league will be a seven-on-seven format, for ages 10-12 as well as 13-15 year olds.

HASA surf season to start The Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association will begin its Big Island surf contest season on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Honoli'i. Five more events will follow each month.
Skilled surfers, longboarders, shortboarders and bodyboarders of all ages are encouraged to compete, a spokesperson said.
At the end of the season, the top surfers who entered at least four events will earn the chance to compete at the state championships in June on Oahu. Entry forms for the Oct. 19 contest are due no later than Oct. 15 to avoid higher beach entry fees. Wahine Warrior soccer tourney
The second annual Wahine Warrior 7-A-Side Challenge will be held Nov. 14-15 at Pai'ea Stadium on the Kamehameha-Hawaii campus.

Kuki'o Blue Water Swim set The fifth annual Kuki'o Blue Water Swim will be held Oct. 4 at 8 a.m. to benefit Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai.
The Hui was established to assist the Division of State Parks in managing the natural, cultural and scenic resources of Kekaha Kai State Park in North Kona.
The race consists of a 1.2-mile swim from Kua Bay to Uluweuweu Bay. An awards ceremony with refreshments and entertainment follows the race at Kikaua Point Park.
Limited to the first 250 participants, athletes may register by calling Paola Calciolari at 325-4108 or by visiting http://www.kukio.net. The fee, which includes Patagonia race shirt, swim cap, and brunch, is $50, and keiki under 12 are $20. Those who register online must do so by Oct. 1.

Wrestling clinic set for Pahoa There will be a free wrestling and takedown event Oct. 25 at the Pahoa Community Gym.
Sponsored by Pahoa Weed and Seed Project's Youth Empowerment Subcommittee, Pahoa High and Intermediate School, Hawaii County Police Department (HI -PAL) and the County of Hawaii Prosecutor's Office, the clinic is open to all interested persons above the age of 6, regardless of experience.
Wrestlers interested in participating in the afternoon takedown event must have at least one year of high school/folk style experience or are must have completed the wrestling clinic.
Clinicians include Olympian wrestlers Jeffrey Cobb (2004) and Maria Dunn (2008).
Registration for the clinic and takedown will from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Oct. 25, and the clinic will follow from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (9-30 a.m.-noon for female wrestlers). The takedown event will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Participants for both events are required to bring their current medical insurance card, wrestling attire, wrestling shoes or high top shoes, extra change of clothing and water. All wrestlers age 17 and under are required to have parent or legal guardian signature.

There will be two divisions -- ages 6-7 and 7-8 -- and both divisions will be limited to 10 teams.
Registration will be taken on a first-come, first-servis basis on the night of the meeting. Interested teams must send a representative to the meeting to obtain league information and to enter.

The Puna region of the American Youth Soccer Organization is holding its last walk-up registration for the fall season Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Shipman Park.

Youth golf program planned The Big Island Junior Golf Association will be conducting a beginner golf program for children age 12 and under at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course Driving Range, starting Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m.
There will be a minimum of six group sessions. The sessions will be led by Rodney Acia, Head PGA Golf Professional, and his staff.
All participants are required to join the Big Island Junior Golf Association or be a current member, wear shoes and bring at least one golf club. The annual BIJGA membership fee is $50.

In the Paint Skills Camp For Post Players
Mayor Mufi Hannemann and former Chaminade Universitycoach Merv Lopes have teamed up to form the inaugural "In the Paint Skills Camp" for boys and girls next month at Manoa Valley District Park Gym.The weekly camp — focusing on post skills — will be open to middle school students grades five to eight and high school students, and also features a coaches clinic. In addition to Hannemann and Lopes, camp coaches will include University of Hawai'i men's coach Bob Nash, Hawai'i Pacific men's coach Tony Sellitto, Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's coach Wendy Anae, BYUH men's assistant Brandyn Akana, Kamehameha-Hawai'i boys coach Nelson Wong, Punahou boys coach Dan Hale, former Chaminade standout Tony Randolph, plus former high school coaches Kaipo Spencer, Sol Batoon and Rodney Veary.

Kona Marathon registration The Kona Marathon and Family Fun Runs will be held June 29, starting and finishing at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort.
The courses includes marathon, half-marathon, 10 kilometers and 5K.
The marathon course follows the run portion of the Ironman Triathlon and extends into the unique black lava landscape of the Big Island.
Distances are open to runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes.
In support of kids health and wellness, Keauhou Veterinary Hospital has made a donation for cash awards for kids ages 9-19 running in the 5K race.

UHH women's soccer camp The University of Hawaii at Hilo will host a wahine summer soccer camp July 23-27 at the UHH multi-purpose field. Camp curriculum includes technique, tactics, dribbling and feinting, goalkeeping, a college night and sports psychology workshops.
Along with UH-Hilo head coach Travis Clarke, camp coaches will include Real California Soccer Club director Jack Craig, Vulcan men's soccer assistant coach C.J. Cooper, UH-Hilo women's assistant coach Jobette Nabarro, former Vulcan women's assistant Alana Cabatu, sports psychologist Haley McEwan and UH-Hilo players.
Players can choose from three camp options. A residential camp, costing $350, is available for players ages 13-18 who wish to live on campus. Players who do not need to live on campus can attend a commuter camp for $275. In addition, there is a $95 day camp for players ages 9-14.

Panaewa Alii gridders, cheer The Panaewa Alii Football Association is accepting registration for the 2008 flag football and cheerleading season. Boys and girls who are interested must be between the ages of 5 to 16.

Practice will begin the first week of March, and games will begin in the middle of April and run to the first week of June.

Keaukaha Pop Warner sign-up The Keaukaha Warriors Football Association is holding registration for the 2008 Pop Warner flag football season. Age brackets are cubs (5-7), bobcats (8-10), wildcats (11-13) and panthers (14-16).

New players must have an original copy and two copies of a birth certificate; two copies of a second quarter or current report card; and two copies of a medical card.

The season will run from April to June. W-P girls softball sign-ups Waiakea Pirates Girls Softball is accepting applications for girls ages 10-14. The age-limit requirement is determined by what your age was on Jan. 8, 2008. For example, if you were age 14 on Jan. 2, 2008 and your birth date falls after that date, you are eligible. Likewise if you are age 10 and your birth date is after Jan. 2, 2008, you will be eligible. "We will accept girls turning 10 years of age in 2008 preferably with experience for safety reasons," a spokesperson said. Practices begin at 4 p.m. today at Ainaola Park.

AYSO registration Saturday The American Youth Soccer Organization will conduct registration for its spring season from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Kailua-Kona Wal-Mart.
For children born between Aug. 1, 1993, and Aug. 1, 2001, the co-ed season runs from March through June. The registration fee is $55, with siblings receiving $5 discounts.

Rugby coach needed -for Kona Koa Kona Koa Rugby Club, a Hawaii Youth Rugby club, is seeking a head coach, team manager and a practice field for its team that kicks off the season Feb. 9 against Hilo. Women's water polo camp in Kailua-Kona The County of Hawaii, Parks and Recreation, Aquatic Division will hold a women's water polo camp Monday evenings from Jan. 28 to March 31 at the Kona Community Aquatic Center in Kailua-Kona.

U.S. Amateur qualifier deadline Wednesday Entry forms for the sectional qualifier of the 83rd U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship are available at http://www.usga.org/champs/apply.
The 36-hole sectional qualifying round is scheduled for June 14 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
The national tournament will be held July 14-19 at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.
Entries are open to all male and female amateur golfers who since Jan. 1 have been bona-fide public course players and have not held privileges at any course that does not extend playing privileges to the general public.
Beginning this year, there is a special stipulation in regards to handicaps. All golfers must have a USGA handicap index of 4.4 or less issued from a licensed golf club.
Completed forms, along with a $50, fee must be received by 5 p.m. EDT Wednesday, at the United States Golf Association, P.O. Box 223 Far Hills, N.J. 07931-0223.
Entries will not be accepted locally. It is highly recommended that entries be filed electronically to reduce errors and delays.

Super Senior Tennis League East Hawaii District 2008 Super Senior Tennis League captains planning to form a Super Senior doubles tennis team must inform the district Super Senior local league coordinator by Monday, June 9.
Players must be 60 years of age or older in 2008. Current USTA membership is required.
Men or women doubles team will be a combination NTRP 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 or 9.0 with the rating difference between doubles partners not more than 1.0. Team registration will begin on July 1.

Summer tennis camp ages 8-18 The Hilo Junior Tennis Club and Prince Racquets will hold a summer tennis camp for beginners, intermediate and advanced level children ages 8-18, scheduled June 16-July 18.
The instructor is Big Island tennis coach Randy Kunimoto, assisted by UHH tennis players Aaron Tada, Kevin Tamura, Luiz Gonzaga and Stephen Royalty. The camp will be held at the Halai Tennis Courts at Hilo Intermediate School.
The program runs Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 1-2 p.m. for beginners, 2-3 p.m. for intermediate and 3:45-5:45 p.m. for advanced. The cost for the five-week camp is $200 for the entire beginner program, $300 for the Intermediate and $400 for the advanced. Weekly rates are also available at $50, $75 and $100, respectively.

Hilo Little League registration Hilo American Little League and Hilo National Little League have combined to form the Hilo Little League Juniors and Hilo Little League Seniors. The leagues are conducting their 2008 season registration for 13-14-year-olds (juniors) and 15-16 (seniors).
