Kahuku outscores Waiakea 13-7 in the third quarter to go ahead. Kahuku would then jump to a nine point lead midway through the fourth before Waiakea would make one final run attempt but fall short.

DII Selections

 

The surprise of the season was the emergence of the Cardinal. Without a true center and a relatively young team, no one thought the Cardinals would challenge for the BIIF DII Title. Not very deep but with some promising young talent Coach Harry Scanlan-Leite got the most of his players. His patient half court 1-4 motion and effective zone offense kept most opponents at bay. His team was able to knock off DI opponents Honokaa and Hilo. Also they were able to defeat DII defending champion Kohala in the first game of the season. His team played together with patience and composure on offense and defense and was enjoyable for fans to watch. Earning a second bid to the HHSAA tournament and for his team’s play he is Hawaii Sports Page coach of the year. Don Fernandez came in second in the balloting for DII coach as the Kohala Cowboys ran away with the title in the BIIF tournament.

Brandon Bautista could very well be the best player to come out of Kohala in many many moons. The young Bautista is our player of the year for his leadership of the Cowboys. His offensive assists and ball handling made Kohala a most balanced team. Kohala’s fast paced style fit Bautista well. Jacob Andrade was the Danny Ainge of the Cardinals. His pesky defense and pure shooting made him the best scoring sophomore in the DII level. A great shooter and ball handler Andrade should have a promising career for the Cardinals in years to come. Cassius Aiwohi-Kegler made a strong push for player of the year by being the defender in the paint for St Joseph. Without a true center Aiwohi-Kegler was responsible for making the smaller Cardinals inside tougher. Many felt Kegler was the most important link to their success. Djavan Cackley was the scoring machine for the Bulls of Parker. The free style offense of the Bulls fit Cackley as he scored in bunches and one time almost hit 50 points in a game versus a DI opponent. Mana Pasco was Kohala’s most steady inside player as Alex Vujovich was hurt in the beginning of the season. Pasco had a good BIIF tournament and his steady rebounding and smart offensive skills helped the Cowboys tremendously down the wire. Jonathan Viernes kept Pahoa in most of the games versus DII opponents and his scoring ability made opponents honest in their defensive attack.

Punahou squeezes past Kamehameha

February 23, 2008: Punahou squeezed past a resilient Kamehameha-Hawaii team to win the HHSAA DI tournament last night at the Neal Blaisedell arena. The contest saw a composed Kamehameha handle Punahou's full court pressure and had a chance to win the game with the ball and possesion at the end. Hogan Rosehill had a game high 20 points for the Warriors and Kameron Steinhoff led the Buffanblu with 13 points. This was the BIIF's highest finish since 2000 when Larry Manliguis and the Hilo High Vikings won the HHSAA title. Kamehameha was able to break Punahou's full court press and convert many for easy baskets that led to an early first quarter lead. However, Punahou was able to make a 12-0 run in the second quarter and taking a 23-19 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

Punahou's half court man seemed to disrupt the Kamehameha offense as it sputtered in that second quarter. Meanwhile, Punahou kept their inside pressure on offense and made some easy inside points or was fouled making their free throws. Hogan Rosehill sat out for some time in the second period and Kulani Soares was called on to assist on big men Kameron Steinhoff (6-5), and Trevor Crabbe (6-6). Punahou's big muscle player Manti Te'o was also in foul trouble and sat out for most part of the second quarter. In the third quarter Kamehameha fought back to tie the game and eventually go ahead mainly due to the hustle of the team defense and inside rebounding of Rosehill and Kealoha Kramer, however Punahou made a run just before the third quarter ended to tie the game at 33-33.

In the fourth quarter the lead would see saw back and forth with Kamehameha holding on to a slim one point lead with more than a minute remaining. However, Punahou Manti Te'o answered on layup to put Punahou ahead with 44 seconds remaining. Kamehameha would call time out to set up a last play but made an errant pass out of bounds to give Punahou possesion and the lead. Kamehameha fouled Punahou, which made their two free throws to seal the game. Konawaena won by forfeit over Moanalua which was suspended due to an ineligible player. Kohala defeated Kaiser 63-59 for fifth place in the HHSAA DII division.

Trey Note: Punahou reserve and sixth man Shane Yoshiyama used to play for the Manoa basketball teams that used to make it's annual trek to Hilo for the Hi-Pal Winter Classic and the Kona Pony tournaments. Shane's father Steve Yoshiyama and Cody Waltjen's (Kamehameha) father Woody Waltjen became good friends due to these annual tournaments.

 
    Farrington beat Aiea in overtime to take the DII HHSAA Boys Tournament. Two former Hilo residents Kory Naeole and Keenan Naeole were rising baseball and basketball players here in Hilo before their father Toby Naeole found a promising Job in Honolulu. Both play on the Aiea basketball and baseball teams and have found success. Kory Naeole and Keenan once caught the eye of several Kamehameha coaches including Randy Apele in a scrimmage between Kamehameha middle school and Eastside Playaz basketball organization at the Kamehameha middle school gym.

Kamehameha Reaches HHSAA Final

February 23, 2008: Kamehameha defeated Moanalua 51-45 last night in the HHSAA DI Boys Basketball Championships at the Neal Blaisdell Arena. Kealoha Kramer scored 14 points while Colton Collins added 12. Moanalua's Stevie Austin scored 18 points. The Warriors now face ILH second seed Punahou which defeated Konawaena last night 61-35. Kahuku native Football phenom Manti Teo scored 16 points for the Buffanblu while Robert Toma contributed 12 and Kameron Steinhoff had 11. Darryl Milana and Kekoa Carvalho had ten points each. Trey Note: Punahou's Kameron Steinhoff is no stranger to Big Island Boys Basketball players. Steinhoff came to several youth tournaments on the Big Island including the Papaikou Shootout, Kona Stingrays and WYBT tournaments. His youth coach was Robin Puahala who is a police officer on Oahu. Youth coaches like Puahala are the root of all good high school players, who instill good fundamentals and valuable tournament experience while young.

Kohala edges University to move to fifth place title game

February 23, 2008: Kohala moved into the title match of the fifth place game by defeating University 65-60. Brandon Bautista had a game high 18 while Mana Pasco had 11 for the Cowboys. Nah Cong-Viernes and Victor Jube had 13 each while Dylan Gomez chipped in 10. St Joseph defeated Kauai 75-70 in consolation play as Jacob Andrade scored 29 points for the Cardinals. Basil Walton scored 22 for the Red Raiders.

Kamehameha-Hawaii and Konawaena reach Semifinals in HHSAA Tourney

February 21, 2008: At McKinley High School gym, Kamehameha-Hawaii beat brother school Kamehameha-Maui 52-38 while Konawaena escaped a last quarter rally by Kamehameha-Kapalama 54-53.. This is the first time that all three Kamehameha campus teams have been in a HHSAA quarter final round at one time. Colton Collins scored 12 points for Kamehameha-Hawaii while Kekoa Turberville scored 12 for KHS-Maui. Kamehameha-HI jumped to a 13 point lead after the first quarter and expanded on it to sixteen after three quarters. At Radford High School gym, Konawaena opened up a 12 point half time lead mainly due to a good second quarter. Kamehameha-Kapalama cut the lead to nine by the end of three quarters. KHS-Kapalama outscored Kona 22-14 making it anybodies game at the end. However the Wildcats hung on to win.

In DII action Kohala lost their opening game by losing to Farrington 53-34 at Pearl City High School. St Joseph played Word of Life in the consolation bracket. Farrington beat Pearl City in first round action 50-39.

February 15, 2008: Konawaena did the little things that win Championships and Konawaena's little big man Hookela Liftee did just that. Liftee made some key passes, including an unbelievable assist to Carvalho, played defense and then forced a turnover as time expired. Although Liftee scored only eight points, his third quarter play ignited Konawaena past Kamehameha. Kekoa Carvalho carried the Wildcats in the fourth quarter posting up and creating inside opportunities and defensive problems for the Warriors.

Kamehameha seemed to be cruising in the first half leading 11-7 after the first quarter and 23-16 at the half. Isaiah Kekaulua hit a big time trey from 26 feet with time running out to sieze the momentum for the Warriors just before the half. The largest crowd of the year for a BIIF game went wild in appreciation for the almost desperate attempt. Kona would open up the third quarter with defensive pressure and held Kamehameha to only one basket for the quarter. Hogan Rosehill got into early foul trouble and sat out for most part of the third quarter. That is when Konawaena attacked and took control of the game. Senior Kalii Kunitomo and Liftee asserted offensive pressure by attacking the basket. Kunitomo hit a layup with 3:06 to give the Wildcats a 26-23 lead and Kona never gave up the lead there after.

Kekaulua again was in a last second play as the third quarter ended but with reverse consequences. Kekaulua got called for a foul as time expired giving Konawaena two free throw attempts. However, only one free throw was made to give the Wildcats a 29-25 lead.

Carvalho got the important first basket of the fourth quarter giving the Wildcats a 31-25 lead. Kekaulua hit a big trey after Konawaena went ahead 34-28 with 6:19 to go to pull Kamehameha within three points 34-31. After a change of possession Warrior Kawika Cazimero then hit a pull up jumper to make it 34-33. Carvalho was fouled and converted one of two foul shots to make it 36-33. Wildcat Milana then fouled Kamehameha's Colton Collins who converted one of two free throws to make it 36-34 Konawaena. Konawaena would pull ahead 42-38 with less that 2 minutes left in the ball game behind Carvalho's scoring. Warrior Cazimero then would knock a three pointer with 1:37 left to pull the Warriors within one point 42-41. At this point it was anybody's game. Konawaena would run the clock; Kamehameha sat back in a sagging man defense preventing an easy layup or foul situation and challenging the Wildcats to take an outside shot. Kamehameha would then be forced to foul with 39 seconds left and time running out. Carvalho went to the charity stripe and missed the front end of a one and one free throw and the ball was rebounded by Kealoha Kramer of the Warriors. Warrior Coach Nelson Wong called a time out with 31 seconds left to talk about winning on a last basket. Kamehameha patiently looked for their opportunity but did not force the issue. The Warriors then used a full time out with nine seconds left to set up one last quick hitter. On the inbound play the ball was stolen as Konawaena sealed the Championship winning the BIIF tournament and winning the regular season championship. With the BIIF Championship Konawaena will probably get a first round bye in the upcoming HHSAA DI Tournament. Kamehameha will also make a return trip to Oahu as the BIIF second seed and play opening day of the tournament. Kekoa Carvalho led all scorers with 17 points, while Kealoha Kramer led Kamehameha with 14 points followed by Isaiah Kekaulua with 13. Members of the Konawaena team include Jordan Awa-Williams, Hookela Liftee, Kali'I Kunitomo, Frank Ah Too, Sam Unger, Thomas Deniz, Kekoa Carvalho, Darryl Milana, Daniel Royce, Tim Johnson, Tovaega U'ulopa, Dakota Smith, Austonn Lazoff, Dave DeMello, and Joshua Kalili. Cowboy's Pressure Stymies Cardinal

February 15, 2008: Kohala used an all around solid game to run past St Joseph 56-37 in the BIIF DII Championship. St Joseph was never able to get into their half court game as the Kohala full court pressure disrupted their tempo. It was a full team effort for the Cowboys, which looked bigger, stronger and quicker than the Cardinals. Coach Don Fernandez went deep into his bench early and often keeping his troops fresh and it worked as the tempo wore down a Cardinal team with limited depth. Led by point guard Brandon Bautista and big man Alex Vujovich, Kohala was able to get quick baskets on turnovers and ran a solid half court game with their five out motion. Mana Pasco led Kohala with 13 points while Brandon Bautista had nine. Jacob Andrade led the Cardinals with 13 points. With the win Kohala will be the top seed for the BIIF and may get a first round bye in the Upcoming HHSAA tournament on Oahu.  St Joseph will also represent the BIIF in the HHSAA tournament. Members of the Kohala Championship team include; Dean Snelling, Arvin Campollo, Brandon Bautista, Sean Brannigan, Blaise Kise, Tobe Kailimai, Alex Vujovich, Cameron Naihe-Tabiolo, Mana Pasco, John Allen Antonio and Zeke Perry. Coaches for Kohala are head coach Don Fernandez and assistants James Marquez and Kihei Kapeliela.

Kamehameha Kapalama Shoots out Honokaa

February 18, 2008: Kamehameha-Kapalama shot lights out as they downed Honokaa 50-27. It was a reunion of sorts for Pii Mins and Auwae Derego of the Warriors of the ILH. Auwae Derego, Pii Mins, Kien Aveiro, Keala Freitas and Chris Gambil were part of a successful youth team Waimea Knights, which was coached by their uncle Honokaa assistant coach Randy Gambil. The Knights would challenge for the championship in every 3 on 3 tournament and Hi-Pal holiday tournaments. Mins would also make the trek to play in the Hi-Pal Christmas tournament in Hilo with the successful Hoops Pa'ina team coached by Mid Pac coach Jeff Won. Hoops Pa'ina became the most exciting youth boys team to watch as they won every youth tournament in Hawaii and in Las Vegas. Mins speed and athleticism made him a future player to watch. Hoops Pa' ina had some memorable games against the Gameboys and the Piopio Bears team that had Hogan Rosehill, Cody Waltjen, Colin Cabatbat, TJ Yasuhara, Colton Collins, coached by Mark Saito. The Waimea Knights team would also have some memorable games against the Gameboys team whose members included; Vicky Tagalicod, Ryan Fukunaga, Kawika Cazimero, Makana Cazimero, Haku Ishibashi and Isaac Chung.

 

DeRego whose family is from Waimea transferred to Kamehameha-Kapalama and has made an impact for the Warriors. Kawika Lyons led Kamehameha with 15 points while Keala Freitas led Honokaa with eight points. Kamehameha ran to a 19-7 halftime lead and stretched the lead to 36-12 after three quarters.

Kamehameha-Kapalama with the win earned the last HHSAA tournament bid and has a solid chance to capture the tournament.

Kamehameha slays the Dragons for HHSAA Berth
Kamehameha downed Honokaa last night 68-49 at the Kamehameha-Hawaii campus. Konawaena defeated Waiakea last night giving the automatic second HHSAA tournament bid to Kamehameha. Honokaa came out some what sluggish after battling Hilo to the wire the night before. Kamehameha's home court advantage and fresh legs proved to be the difference. Kamehameha avenged an earlier season 56-52 loss to Honokaa. Warrior Hogan Rosehill had a big game scoring 24 point while Kealoa Kramer and Colton Collins contributed 14 each. Honokaa Kapanaia Carvalho finished with 19 points and Kien Carvalho had 13 points for the Dragons. Honokaa still has a chance to go to the HHSAA tournament if it can win versus Waiakea and the third seed ILH team on Saturday.

Konawaena's defense holds down Waiakea
Konawaena held the balance offensive attack of Waiakea down enroute to a 56-31 victory. The Wildcat defense held the Warriors to only 14 point in the first half and was able to frustrate the Waiakea scorers all night. TJ Yasuhara was the only Warrior to hit double figures with 10. Wildcat Austonn Lazoff had a game high 14 points. Konawaena will now meet Kamehameha-Hawaii in the Championship game on Friday at the Civic Auditorium. The winner will get the BIIF championship along with the BIIF top seed in the HHSAA tournament on Oahu. Waiakea now become road Warriors travelling to Honokaa tonight to face the Dragons for the right to play the ILH third seed on Saturday for the final HHSAA tournament bid. Honokaa and Waiakea will have to play four games in five nights to achieve that feat. Last year Konawaena enjoyed a successful BIIF tournament finishing runner up with a victory over second seed Keaau. However, due to Honokaa (BIIF regular season champion) being upset in the semifinal game the BIIF tournament champion (Kamehameha) got the automatic bid. Konawaena then lost to ILH third seed St. Louis at Kealakekua for the HHSAA last tournament bid.

Kohala gets into DII Championship with victory over Pahoa
Kohala beat Pahoa last night in Kapaau 61-25. Kohala's size advantage and the full court pressure was the difference in the game. Sophomore Brandon Bautista scored 19 points to lead the Cowboy attack and Mana Pasco and Alex Vujovich had strong games with 12 points each. The Daggers finish the season with a 5-10 record.

St Joseph Eliminates Ka'u
The Cardinal took care of business at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium defeating Ka'u 59-41.  Sophomore guard Jacob Andrade scored 22 points to lead St Joseph to the showdown title game against Kohala on Friday night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. The winner of the Kohala, St Joseph game gets the BIIF championship and the BIIF top seed in the DII HHSAA tournament. Royden Masulit and Senior Paul Batad enjoyed solid offensive and defensive games. Julian Naboa was good for 10 points to lead the vastly improved Trojans.

Honokaa survives playoff scare
 
Hilo sprinted to a 4 point lead behind quick layups by Ryan Fukunaga and Lucky Ranario within seconds of the game forcing Honokaa to take a quick time out, which would signal Honokaa was in a battle. Hilo kept the offensive pressure on Honokaa until the second quarter when Honokaa took advantage of Hilo’s coaching staff's decision to rest three of the team’s starters. Honokaa stretched their lead to thirteen points behind Honokaa's Kien Aveiro and Justin Raquel scoring surge. Hilo reinserted their starters with little more than two minutes left before the half and was able to cut the lead to seven points at the intermission. Honokaa and Hilo traded baskets in the third quarter with Honokaa’s outside shooting of Raquel and Keala Frietas and Hilo’s inside finishing game of Nick Acosta and Kahiau Kapsky. Honokaa kept their lead of seven at the end of the three quarters and started the fourth quarter with some quick baskets that brought the Dragon’s lead to 13 points.

Hilo would fight back with an inside basket by Junior Kaulana Kalauli-Rowe and two quick treys by Junior guard Ryan Fukunaga to bring Hilo within four points with little more than six minutes in the game. Honokaa coach Eddie Rodrigues called time out and instructed defender Shelton Kalilikane to deny Hilo guard Ryan Fukunaga any more shots and quickly seized the momentum back. Honokaa then went on an offensive run and stretched their lead to 11 points. With less than two minutes left, Hilo played quick foul using reserves to foul and send Honokaa to the line. The strategy worked as Hilo crept back into the game when Honokaa missed some major free throws and Hilo got the ball inside and was fouled. The Vikings got within three points when Nick Acosta hit a walk up trey with 44 seconds left in the game. However, the Vikings quickly fouled and Honokaa converted two free throws to send the lead to five. Hilo failed to convert on the next possesion and was forced to foul again and Honokaa converted free throws to extend the lead to seven. On the following inbounds, Honokaa used a double team deny and press strategy and caught Hilo off guard on the inbound pass causing two turnovers  to seal the victory. Honokaa had a balance of scorers with senior Kien Aveiro finishing with 18 points, hot shooting Justin Raquel had 16, Kapanaia Carvalho, Keala Frietas and Shelton Kalilikane all contributed 12 each.  Hilo senior Nick Acosta finished with a game high 25 while junior Ryan Fukunaga added 10 to lead the Vikings. Honokaa now travels to Kamehameha in the BIIF DI semifinal game tonight at 7pm at the Kamehameha-Hawaii Campus Gym. If Konawaena defeats Waiakea the winner of the Honokaa and Kamehameha semifinal game gets an automatic second HHSAA bid. If Waiakea wins, then the winner of the BIIF DI Championship will determine the HHSAA DI bid.

Hilo High Coach Larry Manliguis Was Legendary

December 27, 2007: Long time Hilo High Viking Boy's Basketball coach Larry Manliguis lost his life early this morning after battling an illness, he was 65. Manliguis was diagnosed with a severe illness prior to the start of the 2007-08 Boys BIIF Basketball Season in November. Larry Manliguis played for and was an alumnus of Hilo High School. This 2008 season was to be Manliguis' 24th season of coaching at Hilo High School. Before Manliguis became head coach of the Vikings he served as an assistant to his older brother Al Manliguis who won a championship in 1964. After taking the helm at Hilo High, he and his coaching staffs won 11 BIIF titles, along with two Hawaii State Athletic Association Championships in 1991 and 2000. No other outer island team has won two championships. Manliguis' Viking teams made it to the HHSAA Final four seven times. Also in 1991 & 1992 Hilo reached the final in back to back years. Many of his players he coached have gone on to coach at the college, high school, and youth levels. Some of those players include David Kaneshiro (UHH Assistant, former head coach-Webster College), Kyle Keamo (Hilo High JV), Jason Kauhi (Waiakea High-Boys Varsity Head Coach), Bruce Ferreira (former Waiakea Girls JV Head Coach), Ben Pana (former Keaau Varsity Assistant, current Hilo High assistant), Mark Kawaha (Keaau High Girls Varsity Head Coach), Donald Yamada (Keaau High Girls Assistant), Shannon Poe (Kamehameha Girls JV Head Coach), and Brandon Kauhi (Waiakea High Boys Varsity Assistant). Manliguis recently quoted in last year's Hilo High Viking booklet that he loved the song "Sweet
Caroline" by Neil Diamond and liked Andrea Bocelli music. He loved eating ice cream
and spare ribs. He quoted " I love the game of basketball and I believe that through it, we can teach young men about the game of life, so they can develop into caring productive, contributing members of our society." " He mentioned that winning the state tournament in 1991 and 2000 and playing in the triple overtime state championship game in 1992 were standout memories in his coaching career, but added there were many thrill of victory and agony of defeat







Assistant coach Royden Okunami said, "The key to my life is coaching alongside a coach like Larry and his staff." "I did appreciate Larry's philosophies in which he puts the boys and the team as his top priority." We shared feelings of caring for each other, which made it priceless." "His caring and giving ways is what most will remember Larry for." One example was evident last year when he treated the whole staff and team to dinner after defeating Baldwin in last years Merv Lopes tournament. Wayne Kaneshiro is currently the interim head coach for the Vikings for 2007-08.Â
