Senior Laden Vikings Pave Way to BIIF Championship

By Hawaii Sports Page
Going into the 2009 season, the Hilo High Vikings clearly looked the favorite. A team that in 2008 just missed going to the BIIF Championship game. In 2008 the young Vikings with only one senior, defeated heavily favored Waiakea and Kamehameha in regular season. However one close game loss to a Kamehameha team led by Blake Amaral and Kolten Wong in the 2008 BIIF Championships ended what was a successful season. However the bitterness of not going to the HHSAA tournament spurred the motivation to work hard in the off season.

Behind a hungry returning senior crop, the 2009 Vikings were not to be denied a BIIF Championship. The Vikings made the most of their given talents and experience to capture the Stanley Costales preseason tournament and the BIIF division one championship.

The seniors; Geonah Ragual, Dustin Devera, Devon Kell, Ryan Fukunaga, Kendal Ushijima, Anson Arakaki, Kai Paniku, Keaka Pilayo, and Matthew Machida, were a close group of players that grew up playing together or against each other in various youth leagues in Hilo. The 2009 Vikings probably had the most impressive individual resume of any BIIF team in many years.  Three players played in the Arizona Fall Classic with Duane Eldredge (Ragual, Fukunaga, Kell). Devon Kell also got invited to the prestigious MLB Area Code games in California. Fukunaga also played with the Rays Scout team in the 09 Australia Goodwill Games. Also several Hilo and Waiakea players honed their skills in the local AJA men’s baseball league the past two years. One of the Hilo seniors led the AJA league in RBI’s (Devera). Arakaki also played with the West Oahu All Star team that featured many of Oahu's talented baseball players and competed in San Diego. In addition several Hilo players played in the Big League regional in Washington with Kolten Wong last summer. Ridge Hoopii-Haslem also represented Hilo in the 08 Junior Little League World Series Championships.

The Vikings offense rumbled through the BIIF with nine straight TKO victories amassing a record number of runs for one season (219). Their only loss was a close misplayed game to Waiakea. However, the Vikings would come back to defeat Waiakea in the 2009 BIIF championship, defeating Waiakea three out of four games in 2009. Also a convincing 18-8 TKO victory over Kamehameha and a 12-1 victory over Kealakehe in regular season were indicative of the offensive power the Hilo squad possessed. Pitching depth was a big question mark for Hilo going into the season. However, Dustin Tagawa provided rock solid pitching to compliment Kendal Ushijima. Tagawa's pinpoint location and varying his speeds kept batters grounding or popping out to the leagues top defense.

The most pleasant surprise in 2009 was the emergence of senior pinch hitter Matthew Machida. Machida had clutch hits throughout the season and was Waiakea’s nemesis as he recorded the key hits in the Vikings victories in preseason and the BIIF Championship game. Also transfer Keaka Pilayo provided additional power and speed to an already seasoned team. High producing underclassman Ridge Hoopii-Haslem (Sophomore), Dylan Comilla (Junior), Dustin Tagawa (Sophomore), Brad Waiki (Junior), Dylan Guthier (Junior), Kahookele Estrada (junior), and Kainao Respicio (Soph) played like seasoned seniors and provided their own brilliance throughout the season in key situations.

2009 ALL BIIF Baseball First Team Selections –Hilo Seniors

Ryan Fukunaga –Shortstop, led the league’s leading offense Hilo in five offensive categories: runs (26), RBI’s (26), doubles (6), Triples (3), home runs (2). Fukunaga hit .429 and stole 10 bases and tied for team lead in walks. Invited to represent the BIIF in the Sugar Mill Classic Senior All Star game and invited to participate in the 09 Paradise Collegiate Summer League. Tendering several college offers.

Geonah Ragual –First baseman, hit a lofty .424 with 18 RBI’s, 17 runs, 4 doubles, and one home run. Ragual also led Hilo in Walks tied with Fukunaga. Planning to play college baseball on the Westcoast.

Dustin Devera –Right Field, batted .391 with 22 Runs, 15 RBI’s, three doubles, one triple, and one home run. Tendering several college offers

Anson Arakaki –Second Base, batted .288, with 20 runs, 9 steals, 9 RBI’s, a double and triple. Planning to attend Pacific College to pursue education and baseball.

Devon Kell –Outfield, hit well in the 2009 HHSAA tournament, and was the only BIIF player ever to be invited to the prestigious Area Code Games in California. Planning to attend Oregon State for Football and Baseball.

Kai Paniku
–DH, Paniku hit .514 with 14 runs, 6 RBI’s. His high on base percentage and batting average was a pitchers nightmare, he provided a boost to the middle part of the Vikings lineup. Undecided on college.

2009 BIIF First Team - Other First Team Selections

Ridge Hoopii-Haslem (Hilo, Soph) – Catcher, hit .424, 21 runs, 19 RBI’s, 28 Hits, stole 11 bases.
Dustin Tagawa (Hilo, Soph) –Pitcher, Hilo’s most consistent and effective pitcher. Won 6 games for the Vikings on the mound with an ERA below 3.2
Dylan Comila (Hilo, Junior) – Third Base- hit .500, 17 runs, 12 RBI’s,
Sheldon Shishido (Waiakea) – Pitcher, held Hilo Scoreless in the final regular season game and the BIIF Championships. Planning on attending a Division 1 West Coast Baseball Program.
Michael Kenui (Waiakea) – Outfield, was the best defensive outfielder for the Waiakea Warriors. Kenui made many key plays in the Warriors win against Hilo. Two runs were saved by Kenui defensive throws. Also Kenui made some clutch hits throughout the season. Kenui may attend a West Coast Junior College.
Josh Kaiwi (Makua Lani) – for the second consecutive year, Kaiwi was in the top of the league in strikeouts. Kaiwi carried the Makua Lani team to its first post season HHSAA berth. Also the only BIIF player to participate in the Paradise Collegiate League in summer 2008.

Coaches of the Year – DI Warren Arakaki (Hilo), DII Jordan Hayslip (HPA)

Warren Arakaki led Hilo to one of Hilo’s most productive offensive years and guided Hilo to an 12-1 record and the BIIF DI Crown. Arakaki has notched 25 wins in his two years at the helm at Hilo High and guided Hilo to a number five ranking in the final regular season Honolulu Advertiser Poll. The number five ranking was one of the highest regular season ranking ever by a Hilo team since the 1985 HHSAA Hilo Championship team.

Jordan Hayslip led HPA to the best BIIF Team finish in the 09 HHSAA Tournament. HPA finished in fifth place in the 2009 Division II HHSAA Tournament. Hayslip also led HPA to the 2009 BIIF DII Crown. It was the first baseball championship in over three decades for the small Waimea private school.

Players of the Year: Geonah Ragual, Ryan Fukunaga, Dustin Devera (Hilo High)
Three players from Hilo High were named to our player of the year award. Each player put up the offensive numbers for the Champion Hilo team. Over a season in baseball it is hard to keep the cycle of hitting consistent. However, these three were key to the Vikings Victories on different occasions throughout the regular season and the BIIF Championships.  The three combined for over 59 RBI's and 65 Runs, which were more runs than most teams in the BIIF scored all season. Also Devera, Fukunaga and Ragual were vital on Hilo's stellar defense.

Sugar Mill Senior Classic

Sugar Mill Classic Honors High School Seniors

By HawaiiSportsPage
May 25, 2009: The 11th Sugar Mill Classic brought together some of Hawaii’s best High School Senior baseball talent for an exhibition game at Hans L’Orange Baseball Park in Waipahu. The name of the game pays tribute to the Waipahu Sugar Mill that is remnant and visible in the background of centerfield at the Park.

The event coordinator is Casey Onaga who is a professional scout for Major League Baseball. The number one was visible throughout the day. Only one run was scored, there were twenty one strikeouts, there was one error on both teams, and the player scoring the only run was Mililani’s Jordan Queja, who was wearing number one. And believe it or not, the game started at one o’clock.

There were only one player each from the BIIF, KIF and MIL; Hilo High’s Ryan Fukunaga, Kauai High’s Dustin Prem, and Kamehameha-Maui’s Dayton Alexander.

Kaiser High School’s Bryce Marcoullier made the most of his one at bat. Marcoullier hit a one out triple in the sixth to break the scoreless game, bringing in Queja.

UHH Vulcan Skipper, Joey Estrella had his eye on his 09 recruiting class, Joshua Wong (Kamehameha), Makana Raime (Kamehameha), Arlie Johnson (Kamehameha), Chris Pascual (Kamehameha), and Reyn Matsuki (Kailua). Johnson made a nice throw to cutoff firstbaseman Kinohi Kelly-Paleka of Molokai to get Punahou’s Tyler Hanzawa at the plate to hold the White team scoreless.

For the Kamehameha players it was an accomplishment to even make it to the field as the seniors celebrated graduation the night before. Their grad night class festivities at the Water Park lasted until wee hours of the morning.

For BIIF Player Ryan Fukunaga, it was an honor to be in attendance with some of the best Hawaii High School players. Fukunaga felt fortunate to start at shortstop and bat in the one spot for the Gray Team. “It was fun to be with some of the players I made friends with at the Arizona Fall Classic this October,” Fukunaga said. Fukunaga went to the Arizona Fall Classic with Duane Eldredge with most of the players on both teams. Fukunaga was a first team BIIF selection where he led Hilo in five offensive categories including; RBI’s(26), Runs(26), Triples(3), Doubles(6), and Homeruns(2). He also was second in steals(10) and tied for the lead in Walks. The Hilo shortstop went hitless at the game, but hit the ball hard the first time up. Fukunaga was also on the all tournament team in the 2009 Maui Baseball Tournament. Fukunaga is still deciding on the college baseball program he will be playing for as he has narrowed it down to three including UHH.

Kamehameha-Hawaii player Jayce Carvalho and Dorian Riveira were the only BIIF players to play in the Underclassmen game held the day previous. There were two other BIIF players invited to the Sugar Mill underclassman game for the BIIF including Ridge Hoopii-Haslem who had a last minute obligation and could not make it. The Sugar Mill Classic has it's place in Hawaii sports and even though the sugar cane is gone from yesterday, at least the high school boys of summer can play together for one day one last time.

April 27, 2009: Waiakea may have the pitching by committee but Hilo has their version of the Hitting by committee. Hilo High Captured the BIIF DI Baseball Championship 8-3 on using a full line up of hitters that contributed one way or another. Hilo had eight batters contribute with one hit each while Devon Kell contributed two for a total of nine hits. Waiakea’s defensive lapses in some key innings added to Hilo’s timely hits and scoring. Hilo was able to put the ball in play hard when needed and forced Waiakea to make the plays contributing to six costly errors.

Kendal Ushijima picked up the win going 5-2/3 innings and giving up only 3 runs on four walks and five hits. Ushijima struck out four. Hilo’s defense was steady as they have been all year. Hilo struck first with three runs in the second inning with Kai Paniku getting on with a hit by pitch. Two singles by Dylan Comilla, Blaine Pilayo and a fielders choice RBI by Anson Arakaki scored two runs to Make it 2-0. Later Dustin Devera would single scoring Pilayo to make it 3-0.

In the third, Waiakea's Sean Wagner singled to right field and advanced on to second on a passed ball. Michael Kenui singled bringing in Waiakea’s first run. Kenui advanced to third on a Ushijima passed ball. Jacob Marciel brought in Kenui with a fielders choice to shortstop Ryan Fukunaga who made the only play at first making the score 3-2.

In the Fourth Hilo struck for two more runs. Comilla walked and Pilayo sacrificed bunt Comilla to second. Kell then had a single scoring Comilla. Kell would then take second on a steal and a bunt fielders choice by Arakaki brought in Comilla to make it 4-2.

Hilo threatened to score in the fifth when Ryan Fukunaga led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a Ridge Hoopii-Haslem bunt sacrifice. Then Geonah Ragual hit a deep flyball to left center that dropped in for a single. Fukunaga was holding up for the tag on what seemed like a catchable ball but was waved home in by coach Arakaki when the ball fell in between two Waiakea outfielders, Waiakea however, made two nice relay throws to get Fukunaga out at home. Michael Kenui relieved Sheldon Shishido on the mound with two outs. Kenui was able to get out of the inning with Ragual in scoring position and two left on base.

Ushijima seem to tire as he started the 6th with a walk to Bryson Aoki. Pinch runner Colby Maeda advanced to third on two wild pitch pass balls. Medeiros would then single in Maeda making it 4-3. Ushijima would then walk Jared Shiroma with two outs. Coach Arakaki made a pitching change and brought in Devera who was able to get Ekolu Martins out on a ground out to Arakaki at second to end the scoring threat.

Hilo would score four runs in the top of the 6th  under some hard hit balls off of Kenui and misplayed Waiakea miscues. Pilayo started the inning when he reached on a throwing error, then later stole second. Kell followed with a bunt single putting runners on first and third. Kell would advance on a stolen base, setting up pinch hitter Matthew Machida’s big two RBI Single that solidified Hilo’s momentum making it 6-3. Kenui would then get Devera out on a strikeout. The next batter Fukunaga hit a towering ball to left field that seemed to have gone in the lights and was misplayed by a Waiakea outfielder, allowing reinserted starter Arakaki to score. On the throw attempt to get Arakaki at the plate, Fukunaga alertly advanced to second, the pitcher then threw an errant throw into centerfield allowing Fukunaga to score all the way home making it 8-3.

Devera would then strike out the three out of the four batters faced in the seventh inning. Matthew Loeffler was able to get a single in that inning. Loeffler finished with a game high three hits.

Matthew Loeffler took the loss on the mound going three full innings and giving up 4 runs on 4 hits. He struck out four and walked four. Sheldon Shishido pitched 1-2/3 innings allowing no runs on three hits. Michael Kenui was charged with two earned runs off of two hits and striking out three. Hilo and Waiakea will now advance to the Wally Yonamine HHSAA Baseball Tournament on Oahu from May 6-10. Video Of BIIF DI Regular Season Championship Game

HPA defeats Konawaena 6-4 to Capture DII Title
By Hawaii Sports Page

2009 BIIF DII Champ
HPA

April 27, 2009: Guts and determination is what could describe HPA’s starting pitcher Devin Fujioka. Fujioka started the game by striking out Konawaena’s first two batters and looked like it was going to be one of those days. Fujioka pitched six innings and gave up only four hits and struck out five batters. He allowed four runs and two walks. Fujioka also walked two critical times at bat allowing his team to work it’s offense.

Meanwhile, HPA scored from the first inning off a Trent Schutte single, Fujioka walk then a Travis Stancil flyout, and a Ryan Rice fielders choice RBI.

Kona would tie the game with one run in the second with a Duke Akiona double to center, passed ball and a Jacob Kuluwaimaka infield single.

HPA would go ahead 4-2 in the fifth inning off a Jayce Bonnister walk, and two hits by Jasen Doe and Rice. HPA would add another run in the sixth when Mika Nikel knocked a solo homer off of Kawika Karratti to make the score 5-2.

Kona would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth on several wild pitches and one hit by Kyle Sugi, and an HPA throwing error. In the seventh HPA would rally off a Fujioka walk, a Stancil ground ball fielders choice and consecutive errors by the shortstop and second baseman. Kiyota then singled in the second run of the inning giving HPA the final 6-4 lead.
Ryan Rice would finish the game in relief of Fujioka and got Sugi and Karratti to fly out and ground out to give HPA the first BIIF Baseball title in 31 years.

Devin Fujioka got the win for his journeyman work of six innings. Ryan Rice just off of a stellar full game pitching performance on Saturday over Makua Lani, came in the seventh and held Kona scoreless and got the save. Kona’s Kawika Karratti pitched five innings allowing four runs off of six hits and four walks, and no strikeouts.

Kyle Sugi was charged with the loss as he pitched two innings allowing two runs on one hit and one walk. Kolten Yamauchi had two of the Konawaena’s five hits, while HPA Travis Stancil paired hits for the Kamakani. Both teams will now travel to Oahu for the Wally Yonamine HHSAA DII Baseball Tournament, May 6-10.

Hilo Jumps Out Quick Then Hangs On To Win Regular Season Title

By Hawaii Sports Page
April 21, 2009: Hilo defeated Waiakea 6-5 at Wong Stadium
in front of a large crowd to win the 2009 regular season title and a berth to the 09 HHSAA Wally Yonamine Baseball Tournament to be held on May 6-10 on Oahu. Hilo jumped out to a big first inning off of Waiakea starting pitcher Mathew Loeffler.  Ryan Fukunaga led off the first with a one out walk and was followed by a Dustin Devera single and then a deep right-center double by Geonah Ragual making it 2-0 quickly. Hilo would add three more runs in the inning. Ragual, Blaine Pilayo, and Kai Paniku all scored off Pilayo getting on base on an errant throw, a stolen base, pass ball and singles by Paniku and Devon Kell.

Waiakea would answer in the second inning with scoring two runs of their own when they loaded the bases and Hilo pitcher Dustin Tagawa walked in two consecutive batters. However, Tagawa was able to get the next two batters out.

Mathew Loeffler settled down in the second and third allowing no runs. Sheldon Shishido came in and gave two solid innings allowing only two hits, the biggest threat came in the fourth when Arakaki reached third on two errors. Ridge Hoopii-Haslem then would bring Arakaki home on a sacrifice fly to right center. Hilo’s Ryan Fukunaga followed with a line drive double down left field to threaten for more runs. However, Shishido would get out of the fourth inning threat and go on to pitch a scoreless fifth.

In the sixth the Warriors added three runs when Matthew Loeffler and Kody Ono singled off of Hilo reliever Bradley Waiki. Several Hilo passed balls and a walk to Jared Shiroma would cost Hilo two runs as Loeffler and Ono scored. Waiki struck out the next batter, but the deflected curve ball strike went awry leading to Shiroma advancing to second. Later Shiroma would score off a Bryson Aoki single to right making it 6-5.

In the sixth inning, Michael Kenui came in relief of Shishido. Kenui was threatened by an Arakaki single, a Hoopii-Haslem sacrifice bunt, moving Arakaki in scoring position. Hilo batter Fukunaga then laced an apparent hit down right field line and Arakaki came racing home. However, Waiakea right fielder Loeffler made a spectacular diving catch and then doubling Arakaki out at second to end Hilo’s insurance runs.

Hilo’s Dustin Devera came in and pitched the final seventh inning and gave up only one hit and getting two ground outs to the infield and a pop up on the final batter. One of those groundout plays was a difficult hit up the middle that Arakaki made that took away a possible base hit.

Dustin Tagawa earned the victory for 5 innings of effective pitching allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs. He walked four batters while getting eight flyouts and seven groundouts.

Hilo reliever Brad Waiki gave up two earned runs off of three hits and one walk. Matthew Loeffler took the loss, he gave up three earned runs off of five hits and two walks. Warrior relievers Sheldon Shishido gave up only one run off of two hits.

Hilo stole five bases included by; Devera, Pilayo(2), Paniku, and Kell. At the plate Loeffler led all batters going 4 for 4. Devera was 2 for 3 and Ragual had the big RBI's(2) in the first. Fukunaga was the only other player besides Ragual to hit for extra bases with his double in the fourth. Also of defensive note Hilo third baseman Dylan Comilla came up with some defensive gems that took away at least two base hits.

Waiakea Slips Past Hilo In Season Final 7-6
By Hawaii Sportspage
April 17, 2009: Waiakea took advantage of the small things that win and handed Hilo it’s first loss of the season in the final game for both teams in BIIF Baseball. Both teams now have identical records forcing a tiebreaker to be played on Monday, April 20 at Wong Stadium.

Waiakea made some spectacular defensive plays to stop Hilo’s offense which rolled nine straight TKO victories (10 run mercy rule) before this match up. Hilo looked like it was going to start off fast with Ridge Hoopii-Haslem reaching on a throwing error by the Waiakea third baseman and reaching on a stolen base. Ryan Fukunaga would then lay down a nice sacrifice bunt advancing to Hoopii-Haslem to third. Hoopii-Haslem then saw that he had a chance to steal home on the play and looked apparently safe, but was called out on the throw by Waiakea first baseman Ekolu Martins.

Waiakea was able to get the lead off batter on five times either on a walk or a hit. Hilo starter Kendal Ushijima constantly fell behind and threw a lot of low breaking balls advancing runners frequently on passed balls throughout the game. Waiakea would then cash in on timely singles to bring in those runners.

Waiakea made some great defensive plays in the outfield as Michael Kenui grabbed an apparent home run hit by Hilo’s Ryan Fukunaga in deep center, catching an overhead drive on the hop at the downward slope of the outfield hill and holding Fukunaga to a triple. Kenui also made a spectacular diving catch that prevented a possible run. He also gunned down an apparent run on a perfect strike at the plate. Waiakea scored two runs in the first two innings and scored one in each of the third and fourth. Ushijima seemed to be gaining some momentum as he held Waiakea scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings. Hilo tied the game in the third inning at 4-4. However Waiakea would maintain the lead until Hilo scrapped for runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Hilo tied the game in the seventh when Hoopii-Haslem singled and was pushed to second on Fukunaga’s sacrifice bunt. Then Geonah Ragual singled in the tying run. However, Kenui was able to get Anson Arakaki to line out to left field.

Ekolu Martins led off the seventh with a walk. Kendrick Gouveia then laced a 1-2 pitch to right field advancing pinch runner Donvan Oshiro to third. Ushijima then intentionally walked Ryan Segawa with first base open. With no outs and the infield and outfield in, Coach Gordon Mau had a squeeze bunt play on, Ushijima apparently threw the ball in the dirt skipping off of Ridge Hoopii-Haslem’s shoulder and allowing the winning run to come in.

Jacob Marciel started and gave up four runs in 2-2/3 of work on the mound. Sheldon Shishido came in relief and allowed only three hits in 2-1/3 innings. Michael Kenui got the win while pitching the last two innings allowing two runs on three hits.
Jared Shiroma and Cody Kaua led Waiakea with two hits each, while Jacob Marciel had two RBI’s. Geonah Ragual led Hilo with a game high three hits, while Brad Waiki and Dustin Devera paired hits for the Vikings. Ryan Fukunaga, was 1-1 with a triple and run scored and two sacrifice bunts

Kamehameha Defeats Kailua From Behind

By Hawaii Sports Page
May 7, 2008: Same teams different year. A year ago in the 2007 HHSAA tournament Kamehameha-Hawaii took out a good Kailua team 5-3 in the first round. This year was a repeat rematch of last year’s first round HHSAA battle. The result came out similar as the Warriors sent the Surfriders into the consolation bracket for the second year in a row winning 4-2. However the Warriors would have to come from behind to take this fast paced game.

Kailua took an early lead in the third when Ryan Kinoshita was hit by a pitch and advanced on a stolen base. Kale Sumner then singled for Kailua making the score 1-0. In the sixth Kailua would add an insurance run on a double by Keoki Reis-Moniz and a sacrifice fly RBI by Bob Lastimosa. Kamehameha-Hawaii would use one big inning in the bottom of the sixth to get all four runs.

Warrior Blake Amaral led off the inning with a single. Russell Kackley would then drill a double to right center field fence scoring courtesy runner Ahi Ikeda. Kulani Soares would ground out moving Kackley to third. Warrior Makana Hirota then singled in Kackley to make the score 2-2. Kulani Soares hit a ground ball for the first out, Alex Gerken then was hit by a pitch putting Warriors on 2nd and 3rd.  Taylor Goo would flyout giving Kailua their second out. Then 9th batter Jace Carvalho hit a grounder to shortstop Elia Lono who made a errant throw scoring the go ahead run by Hirota. On the same play the Kailua right fielder threw another errant throw to homeplate scoring Gerken to make it 4-2. Kailua was able to get out of the inning without further damage.

Blake Amaral would then shut the door on Kailua getting all three Kailua batters in the top of the seventh, two by strike out. Amaral got the win, going 7 innings and giving up 2 runs on 6 hits and 8 strikeouts. Kailua freshmen Ryan McMonigle took the loss pitching 5 innings, and giving up 6 hits and three runs. Bryson Gauthe came in relief and was charged with one run for the Surfriders. In other DI games Rossevelt defeated Castle 3-2, and Mid Pac beat Aiea 3-1 behind Dane Kinoshita's 3 hitter. Kamehameha-Hawaii will play at 11:30 on May 8, Thursday against Maui High at Les Murakami Stadium. Waiakea will play the next game at 2pm at Les Murakami and face the winner of the St Louis vs. Baldwin game.  Buntnote: Kailua coach Corey Ishigo's father is Tom Ishigo who grew up in Honomu. He is good friends with Sheldon Takasaki whose son Darren Takasaki had a succesful high school career at Waiakea. Takasaki is currently on the Hartnell College baseball roster along with Jensen Sato, and Sheldon Otsuka all former players with Waiakea. Corey Ishigo also competed against Kolten Wong's father in AJA State tournaments for many years as Kaha Wong played for the Hawaii AJA all stars and Ishigo plays for the Sheridan AJA team coached by Tom Ishigo

2008 BIIF Playoffs
Waiakea Wins 2008 BIIF Championship

By HawaiiSportsPage.Com
May 2, 3008: In a strange but entertaining night the Waiakea Warriors defeated a resilient Kamehameha team 12-10. The game had everything in it and kept the crowd pleased. This DI Championship was pushed back due to the first DII playoff game going extra innings. The delay start added to a slow methodical game (3 hours, 40 minutes) that ended after midnight. A small rain delay, a flung bat that hit a dugout screen, a towering dramatic homerun, multiple beaned batters, a nine run inning by Waiakea, seven different pitchers, and a birthday song sung by announcer Royden Okunami to Hawaii Tribune Herald sports writer Paul Freeland were all part of the strange night.

Waiakea jumped out early after a nine run first inning and looked to cruise into a Championship. Waiakea went through their whole batting order in that marathon first inning. Makana Hirota started for Kamehameha and took the loss. Kulani Soares came in relief for Hirota in the first inning and quelled the storm. Waiakea seemed to have its batting stroke going in the first inning as they hit multiple singles in the first inning combined with many defensive errors (5) by Kamehameha, including a strange throw to appeal a missed first base that went awry scoring another run. Waiakea's Brian Alben had a big triple in the first and circled the bases and scored on a Kamehameha error.

It appeared as if Kamehameha dug themselves too deep of a hole to recover from. A large crowd was shocked that the game was getting away from being competitive. Waiakea starting pitcher Brian Alben seemed to have his stuff going as he cruised through the first two innings by striking out the first two batters in the first and got Blake Amaral to pop up. In the second inning Alben struck out four and seemed to have befuddled the Kamehameha batters. Waiakea would then score a run in the second, fourth and sixth innings.

Kamehameha would pick themselves off the canvas as they came back and added runs in bunches as they picked up four runs in the third inning when Waiakea pitcher Alben seemed to lose his location as he walked in three runs and reliever Matthew Loeffler balked another run in. Kamehameha would add five runs in the fifth. They would score another in the sixth inning to inch within two runs. The big inning came in the fifth when Kamehameha catcher Kolten Wong blasted a towering three run homer off of Waiakea reliever Sheldon Shishido over right center field scoring Jace Carvalho and Makana Cazimero to cut into the Waiakea lead.

Kulani Soares was relieved in the sixth by Blake Amaral who had pitched the previous night. Amaral coming off a brilliant pitching performance against Hilo, stopped the Waiakea momentum and limited them to only one run. Amaral retired the side in the seventh when he struck out the first two batters.

Kamehameha would threaten in the seventh inning when lead off batter Makana Cazimero singled to right. Kolten Wong then hit an opposite deep ball to Waiakea left fielder Brian Alben to get the first out. Waiakea fans sighed a big relief after Alben caught a ball that sounded like a homerun. Waiakea pitcher Michael Kenui then was able to get Blake Amaral and Russel Kackley out to end the threat and give the Waiakea Warriors the Championship.

Brian Alben got the win pitching two and 1/3 innings, Mathew Loeffler went 2 2/3 inning, Sheldon Shishido gave one inning and Michael Kenui pitched two innings for the Waiakea Warriors. Kamehameha starter Makana Hirota took the loss for Kamehameha, Kulani Soares did a commendable job settling down Kamehameha by working 5 innings, while Blake Amaral pitched the final inning and 2/3.

Starters with multiple hits included; Kamehameha's Jace Carvalho, Makana Cazimero and Waiakea's Brian Alben, and TJ Yasuhara. Kamehameha and Waiakea will represent the BIIF in the upcoming HHSAA tournament at Les Murakami Stadium on the University of Hawaii campus. Waiakea earns the BIIF top seed and should draw a bye in the first round. Other notable teams qualifying for the tournament includes, Pearl City, Aiea, Kailua, Castle, Roosevelt, Punahou, St Louis, Mid Pacific, Maui, and Baldwin.  In earlier BIIF DII games Konawaena upset number one seed Kohala 6-1. Axel Rael-Sato had the big four run grandslam homer for the Wildcats of Konawaena. Kawika Karatti led Kona going 2 for 3 including a double, Cameron Naihe-Tabiolo led Kohala going 2 for 4. Michael Oshita and Byron Tagalicod added doubles for the Cowboys. Kamalani Manatan took the loss for Kohala while Jacob Medeiros picked up the victory for Konawaena.

Honokaa defeated second seed HPA 8-5  to advance into the DII title game. Keala Hookahi-Freitas got the win for the Dragons while Alex Bell took the loss. Freitas also went 4 for 5 at the plate including a double . Honokaa's Kendall Artuyo had two doubles on the day. Dragon hitter Ridge Umeda also went 2 for 3 with four stolen bases.

Honokaa Rallies To Capture DII Championship

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 3, 2008: Honokaa behind most of the game finally broke out in the sixth inning to win the inaugural BIIF DII Baseball Championship 10-6. Behind 5-1 for most of the day and without a hit throughout the fifth, the Dragons finally woke up their bats in the sixth behind a nine run rally. Konawaena's Kawika Karratti kept the explosive Honokaa team off the bases for most of the game. Konawaena scored three runs in the second inning off a Pono Kadooka single to take a 3-0 lead and would add another 2 in the third. Honokaa failed to score in the fifth inning when Karatti loaded the bases on consecutive walks with two outs. A Honokaa batter would run the count to full; just as Karatti was to pitch he made a pickoff of a Dragon runner at third to end the threat. It seemed Honokaa would squander too many scoring opportunities to win this game. However, in the bottom of the sixth inning Wildcat Kyle Sugi would come in relief for an arm tired Karratti. Sugi gave up three walks and three timely hits giving Honokaa five runs. Jacob Medeiros came in for Sugi with the bases loaded and walked in a run and then hit two consecutive Dragons. Chris Mosch, Daniel Fujii, Ridge Umeda, Ian Laird, and Wesley Kaui fueled the nine run inning with hits for the Dragons. Honokaa starting pitcher Hookahi Freitas gave up six runs on six hits. Kendal Artuyo came in relief of Freitas and finished the game for the Dragons. Bevin Kekoa and Axel Rael-Sato paired hits for Konawaena, while Duke Akiona, Pono Kadooka and Cameron Mandaquit paired RBI's. Konawaena, Kohala, HPA and BIIF Champion Honokaa will all represent the BIIF in the upcoming HHSAA at Central Oahu Baseball Complex starting May 7th on Oahu. ESPN radio 850 am will be broadcasting some of the BIIF team games throughout the tournament.

HPA Captures DII Third Place
May 3, 2008: HPA defeated Kohala 9-7 to take third place in the BIIF Championships at Wong Stadium. Kohala trailed HPA 9-3 and rallied to score 4 runs but came up a little short in the seventh inning. Four teams from the BIIF DII will qualify for the HHSAA tournament.

Waiakea edges Keaau in DI Semifinal
By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 1, 2008: Eric Hernandez pitched a solid 5 2/3-inning game to secure Waiakea into the BIIF championship game. Waiakea took the lead in the first off a double by Collin Cabatbat and later scored on a Brian Alben bloop single. The Warriors later plated two more runs in third and another run in the fourth to build a comfortable lead. The Cougars scoredtwo onHernandez in the top of the sixth when Andrew Gouveia and Jonathan Chow led off with singles and later scored on an RBI sacrifice by Kaeo Schwietzer. Waiakea's relieverMichael Kenui came in to stop the Cougar threat by retiring Michael Moniz for the final out of the sixth. Waiakea would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Kenui would then make it interestingby walking a batter in the seventh but got Blane Pilayo out to end the game for the Cougars. Keenan Komeiji led the Warriors going 3 for 3, while team mate Collin Cabatbat was 2 for 4, Tyler Owings contributed a double. Hernandez who relied on his breaking ball most of the day, struck out four and got the win. Michael Kenui picked up the save. Kaeo Schwietzer took the loss for the Cougars pitching a full game allowing five earned runs. Waiakea will face Kamehameha in a rematch of last years BIIF Championship. Keaau loses a great crop of seniors who were hungry to make it to the state tournament, only to come up short for the last two years. Waiakea also donned with a full line up of seniors will take their annual trek to Murakami Stadium for the HHSAA tournament. The Warriors have secured a spot in the State tournament by winning the regular season title with a 10-1 record. Waiakea's only loss this season came off the heels of Hilo (5-0).

Amaral stymies the Vikings

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 1, 2008: Kamehameha's Blake Amaral pitched a full game gem and came up with the two RBI's to propel the Warriors to a 2-0 victory over Hilo. The Warriors who in the regular season lost to Hilo 3-1 came back and was able to get the timely hits in the BIIF semifinal. Amaral's fastball seemed to have better velocity coupled with his breaking slider kept Hilo off the bases for most of the night. Kamehameha broke through a four inning deadlock by plating a run in the fifth. Kolten Wong hit a single and advanced to second when Viking right fielder made a nice throw to get Warrior Makana Cazimero out at third. Amaral later would single to right field bringing in Wong. Hilo's Kendal Ushijima decided to pitch to dangerous Amaral with two outs in the top of the seventh and paid as Amaral drilled a double to deep left field scoring Wong who reached based earlier on a two out single.  Hilo best threat came in the third inning when they had a runner at third base, Brad Waiki singled and advanced on a bunt and fielders choice. However, the Vikings stranded Waiki.  Amaral gave up a hit and Walk to Ridge Hoopii-Haslem and Ryan Fukunaga in the fifth but got them out with some nifty slight footwork on two major pickoffs. Hilo would threaten in the sixth when Ryan Kurosawa hit a single and moved to second. But Amaral got Ridge Hoopii-Haslem out on strikes to end the threat.

Hilo would again get a base runner in the top of the seventh when Ryan Fukunaga led off with a single to right. Geonah Ragual of Hilo represented the tying run and came under a Amaral fastball that went deep to right center for out number one. Amaral then got the next batter to hit into a ground ball double play to end the game. Kamehameha will face Waiakea in the BIIF Championship in the battle of the Warriors. Kendal Ushijima who pitched the full game, scattered seven hits and gave up only two runs versus the high scoring Warriors. took the loss. The Hilo Junior who recorded a shutout and a one run game against Waiakea and Kamehameha earlier in the season holds the best ERA against DI opponents. However on this night, Ushijima was not as sharp as he was in previous outings. Kamehameha batters seemed to work the count favorably in their favor early in the game. Blake Amaral led the Warriors going 3 for 4 with two RBI's, while Kolten Wong went 3 for 4 and had two runs scored. Hilo's only senior, catcher Ryan Kurosawa ended his BIIF career with a hit at his last at bat. The Vikings are laden with a talented Junior and underclassmen group that should make them a solid favorite next year. The Warrior contingent of Blake Amaral, Russel Kackley and Kolten Wong will end their BIIF careers this weekend along with some other talented seniors.

Konawaena and Honokaa Advance to DII Semifinals

By HawaiiSportsPage.com:

Kealakehe Upsets Hilo

Shoop Rains On Hilo's Parade

By Hawaii Sports Page
April 19, 2008: Loren Shoop has come full circle in Hawaii High School Baseball. Shoop a senior and possibly his last game pitching, ruined Hilo's Hit parade. Hilo enjoying their best season thus far with big victories over Kamehameha and Waiakea could not score in bunches as Kealakehe stopped Hilo 4-2. Shoop took a page out of Hilo's Kendal Ushijima by scattering hits and getting the Hilo hitters to groundout or flyout to Kealakehe's steady defense. Shoop's father was sentimental before the game, explaining that this might be Loren's last high school game pitching. Kealakehe out of the BIIF DI Baseball playoff picture were reduced to being spoiler. Shoop who transferred back from Punahou has come full circle. Leaving Kona to enroll at Punahou was an experience in itself. Shoop, playing as a reserve player for the 2005 & 2006 HHSAA Champion Punahou team under Craig Kadooka made him hungry to get back to Kona and play at home.

Shoop also used his bat to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the 7th with a double. Freshman Dustin Tagawa started for Hilo and pitched four steady innings giving up only one run while keeping the Waverider team off balance. Meanwhile sophomore Bradley Waiki gave up a run and pitched two innings for the Vikings. Loren Shoop pitched a 7 inning complete game.

The Vikings took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Ryan Fukunaga hit a deep double over left fielder Dorian Riveira. Fukunaga would later score off a Brad Waiki single to left. Kealakehe would tie the game in the fourth and take the lead in the sixth off a Dorian Riveira RBI and a triple and pass ball.

Hilo would come back to tie the game in the sixth inning when Ridge Hoopii-Haslem singled and made it to third off a pass ball and stolen base. Ryan Fukunaga would then bring in Haslem with an RBI single to right field. Hilo's next batter, Geonah Ragual tagged a deep flyball to right center but was caught by the Waverider centerfielder. Fukunaga then stole second being in scoring position. However, Shoop was then able to get Brad Waiki to flyout. Dustin Devera came in pitching relief in the 7th inning for Hilo. That is when Kealakehe scored two runs off a leadoff walk and one double and a single by Shoop and Riveira.

Hilo made it exciting when Devera made a two out single in the bottom of the 7th. Anson Arakaki was then hit by a Shoop pitch, bringing up Hoopii-Haslem. Hoopii-Haslem seemed to dodge some bullets as two foul pop ups that seemed to end the game were dropped by the Waverider catcher. Then Hoopii-Haslem hit a deep fly ball to the warning track that was played beautifully by the Kealakehe center fielder. The Waverider center fielder made several game saving tracks on some Vikings deep fly balls. Dorian Riveira led Kealakehe going 2 for 3 with a triple, single and 2 RBI's. Ryan Fukunaga led Hilo going 2 for 3 with a double, RBI single and run scored.  Hilo falls to 8-2 for the season opening the title for Waiakea.

Waiakea defeated Kohala at Kapaau 13-1. Brian Alben, Collin Cabatbat, and Keenan Komeiji each went 3 for 4 for the Warriors. Eric Hernandez was the winning pitcher while Blaise Kise took the loss for Kohala. Hernandez also paired hits for Waiakea.
Keaau beat Konawaena 14-1 when they broke open a 4-1 game by scoring 10 runs in the sixth inning. Kaeo Schweitzer picked up the win for Keaau while Kawika Karratti took the loss for Konawaena. Honokaa and Ka'u were deadlocked at 5 until the sixth inning before Honokaa erupted for a combined ten runs in the sixth and seventh innings to win 15-5.
Keala Freitas got the win while Curtis Higashi was tagged with the loss.

Hilo Rises Above Waiakea

Hilo Rises Above Waiakea

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
April 15, 2008: Kendal Ushijima threw a one hit shutout gem, while Devon Kell hit a 3 run homer in the first to lift Hilo into a first place tie with Waiakea. Ushijima who mixed his pitches well, got Waiakea hitters to hit multiple grounders and flyballs. The Junior had a no hitter going into the sixth inning when Waiakea Dayson Lee had a double to break up the no hitter. Hilo scored first off a double by Anson Arakaki, followed by a bloop error on Waiakea second baseman, allowing runners on first and second for Hilo. That brought up Hilo's Devon Kell who blasted a Brian Alben fastball over right center to start Hilo 3-0. Hilo would add a fourth run off a Dylan Guthier walk, a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Kurosawa, and a timely single by Anson Arakaki to make it 4-0.

Hilo added an insurance run in the fourth when Ryan Fukunaga walked and stole second and got to third off a pass ball. Geonah Ragual walked and then another passed ball scored Fukunaga to make it 5-0. In a game of rare multiple hits, Anson Arakaki went two for three with a double and a single, Geonah Ragual and Dustin Devera each had singles for the Vikings. The win broke a 3 season lock that Waiakea had on Hilo for the last three seasons. Ushijima got major defensive help from the Vikings defense that committed no errors but multiple fine plays including steady play by the corners Ridge Hoopi - Haslem, first baseman Geonah Ragual , middle infielders with multiple stops, second baseman Anson Arakaki, and shortstop Ryan Fukunaga. Viking outfielders Devon Kell caught three deep balls and Dylan Guthier chased down a tailing away ball to round out assists for Ushijima. TJ Yashuhara also had a solid game for the Waiakea infield. Ushijima pitched seven innings for the complete game shut out. Waiakea's Brian Alben took the loss, Alben pitched three innings and gave up five runs. Matthew Loeffler came in relief for Alben in the fourth.

Michael Kenui pitched the last two innings for Waiakea. Waiakea rounds out their season against Kealakehe, Kohala and Ka'u, while Hilo has Kealakehe and St. Joseph left on the schedule.

Waiakea Remains Unbeaten

Alben's Heroics Sinks Scrappy Keaau

By HawaiiSportsPage
April 9, 2008: In a pivotal BIIF Boys Baseball match up, Waiakea' Brian Alben slugged a two run home run to break a 3-3 extra inning tie in the tenth. The home run gave Waiakea the victory and kept their unblemished record at 7-0. Alben started the game on the bump and pitched six innings before being relieved. Waiakea's Michael Kenui came in and pitched one and 2/3 innings. Kenui was releived by Catcher Eric Hernandez who got Keaau's John Chow to ground out to third baseman Beau Nishimoto in the eighth inning to end a two out, two on rally by Keaau. Waiakea took a quick three run lead in the first inning off of a pair of hits and a Keaau error. Keaau came back to tie the game at three in the third inning off a Damien Bentosino two run double. Waiakea's Eric Hernandez picked up the win. Keaau's Kaeo Schweitzer got the no decision while Andrew Gouveia took the loss. Keaau drops to 5-2 while Waiakea remains in first place at 7-0.

Hilo Handcuffs Kamehameha

By HawaiiSportspage.com
April 5, 2008: In an important middle of the season DI game, Hilo came ready to play in the first inning as they erupted for three runs, got steady pitching from Kendal Ushijima and some defensive gems. Hilo struck first when Dustin Devera led off with a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt attempt by Anson Arakaki. The sacrifice bunt was misfielded putting pitcher Makana Hirota in an awkward start. Another bunt attempt by Ridge Hoopii-Haslem also went well for Hilo, as Hoopii-Haslem reached base safely. Hilo's Devon Kell and Ryan Fukunaga then answered with RBI singles to put Hilo ahead. Another run scored off a fielder's choice by Brad Waiki put Hilo ahead 3-0. Kamehameha got one run in the third off a single by Jace Carvalho and an RBI single by Makana Cazimero. However, Ushijima was able to minimize the damage by getting Blake Amaral out to end the inning.

Blake Amaral relieved Kamehameha's Hirota in the third inning. Amaral held Hilo in check, as he was able to minimize Hilo's offense. Hilo threatened to score in the third, when Geonah Ragual reached first on a walk, Ryan Fukunaga executed a nice sacrifice bunt that Amaral could not field cleanly allowing runners on first and second. The runners advanced to second and third on two bunt attempts one going for a pop up out. With two outs Amaral was able to strike out the next batter to get out of the jam.

Kamehameha had their best chance to edge closer when Kolten Wong executed a perfect drag bunt single and reached third with only one out. But a deep foul hit to right fielder Dustin Devera ended the Kamehameha threat when Devera made a nice grab and throw to get a tagging up Wong at the plate.

In the fifth inning Hilo appeared to be out of another jam with two outs and a runner on first when Hilo outfielder Dustin Devera dropped a routine fly ball allowing runners to be on first and third. However Ushijima was able to get a hard hit ground ball to Hilo shortstop Ryan Fukunaga who flipped the ball to Anson Arakaki at second.

In the sixth inning the Warriors had runners on first and second with one out but Ushijima got some assistance from Hilo's infield as second baseman Arakaki, shortstop Fukunaga and first baseman Geonah Ragual combined to turn a hard hit grounder into a 4-6-3 double play.

Ushijima made the game exciting by hitting Kolten Wong in the top of the seventh putting the dangerous Wong on first. However, Ushijima was able to retire the next batter and get the final out on a Warrior fly ball to right field. With the win Hilo remains in contention for the title in second place while Kamehameha dropped to third with their second loss of the season.

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
November 22, 2007: College Baseball prospect Kolten Wong
signed early with the University of Hawaii, Manoa Warriors. Wong who has started as a catcher since his freshman year for the Kamehameha Warriors baseball team finally chose UH. UH assistant Chad Konishi went after Wong hard after scouting him several times at the Perfect Game, HHSAA State tounaments, and the Baseball Hawaii Team tryouts. In the team Hawaii tryout run by the Eldredge family, Wong hit a towering home run off of Punahou's Paul Sneider into the strong wind at Oahu Central Park. Punahou Repeats As Champions

By HawaiiSportsPage.com

May 12, 2007:Eric Kakooka is making his mark on Hawaii High School baseball, as he became a four-time winner of the HHSAA Baseball Championship Tournament. Punahou (17-1) got timely hits and good base running as they blitzed a very good Pearl City (13-4) team 7-1. It was Pearl City's first return to the State Championship in many years. Pearl City's Head Coach Mel Seki has been impressed with his team's success this year and is proud of the way they played at the end. They captured the OIA Title by overcoming Kaiser and Kailua in the OIA championship. Pearl City came in as the number two overall seed in this years HHSAA Tournament, while Punahou was the top seed. Punahou's Jeeter Ishida off of one days rest after pitching against a scrappy Hilo team pitched another good game as he threw a six hit gem, walking only two and striking out six. Ryne Acosta and Carlton Tanabe were able to pair hits for Pearl City. Zachary Kometani had a big two RBI double in the fourth.Punahou managed only seven hits but was able to score seven runs by taking advantage of some walks, heads up base running, and deep sac fly RBI's. No one paired hits for Punahou as they struck out seven times but had four walks. Pearl City used three different pitchers in Scott Muraoka, Kurt Poentis, and Cory Yuh. .Buntnotes: Many players on the Pearl City team came to Hilo in 2002 and 2004 for the Hawaii State Little League Majors and Juniors Championships. Those teams were coached by Garret "G" Nago, Nathan "Homey' Numata, and Duane "Cowboy" Kiyota. There are still some balls stuck in the mango tree at Walter Victor Baseball Complex that Kellen "baby Ush" Ushijima crushed. That Pearl City team lost to a very talented Ewa team in 2002. Dennis Fukunaga who heralds from Naalehu and played in the BIIF is an assistant for Pearl City High School he helps run the teams summer program in the American Legion, AAU and summer tournaments. Many players on this years Punahou team was on the last Babe Ruth 15 & Under World Series Championship team in 2005. That year they beat a good Hilo Babe Ruth team in a two game winner take all playoff at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Kamehameha Falls Short In HHSAA State Semifinal

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 11, 2007: Punahou banged out 14 hits in route to a 14-4 victory over Kamehameha-Hawaii. Punahou was able to plate four runs in the first inning off of Warrior starter Kelii Kimi with two walks, two singles and two doubles. Reece Alnas and Kolten Wong walked and scored, while Russel Kackley had an RBI fielder's choice. Kelii Kimi got out of a potential big inning for Punahou in the top of the second as he surrendered three walks, although one was intentional to dangerous hitter Sneider. Kimi was able to get two groundouts and a pop up stranding three base runners. Kimi led off the second inning with a single. However, pinch runner Ross Macanas Jr. was picked off by Sneider erasing the base runner. Reece Alnas Singled in that same inning. Punahou Ends Hilo Quest For State Title

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 10, 2007: Punahou proved why the ILH is always one of the favorites to take the HHSAA Title every year. They defeated Hilo at Rainbow Stadium in the night feature game 8-2. Punahou attacked right away scoring three runs in the first off of a triple by last years pitching MVP Paul Snieder. In the third they added another run off of a double steal play to make it 4-0. Hilo answered in the fourth when Ryan Fukunaga led off with a line drive to center field and then scored when Courtney Arruda lined a double in the Right Center gap. Arruda scored when Punahou outfielders slipped and made a retrieving error, making it 4-2. However, that would be the closest Hilo would come as Punahou added another 4 runs over 3 innings off of walks and timely hits. Punahou’s Jeeter Ishida the ILH’s Premiere pitcher pitched a complete game allowing 5 hits while striking out 10. Hilo’s bright spot were the hits off of the talented Ishida which besides Fukunaga and Arruda included singles by Geonah Ragual, Kiley Kawazoe and Senior Jarrin Shigemura. Hilo will now play St. Anthony of Maui in a battle to play in the fifth place game. Bunt Notes:In attendance at the game was Bruce Ferreira who played for the Hilo High 1985 team that won the HHSAA state championship. There are Hilo fans that still talk about the home run he hit at Aloha Stadium in the championship game. That team is remembered for the three b's. Baba, Blaine and Bruce. Baba Lancaster, Blaine Medeiros and Bruce Ferreira. Warren Arakaki who had a succesful college baseball career at Pacific was an assistant coach for Hilo High in at that time (1985) as he is today for Hilo High.

Hilo Surprises OIA Regular Season Champs 7-1

By HawaiiSportsPage.com
May 9, 2007: Hilo used what was their bread and butter all season, good pitching, defense and contagious hitting. Hilo was the best BIIF defensive team all season allowing only 9 runs the whole year mainly due to the pitching of RT Ebesu and solid infield and outfield play. Hilo had shut out Kamehameha Hawaii, Kea’au and gave up only three runs to BIIF Champion Waiakea in regular season. Mililani found that out last night as RT Ebesu threw a gem of a game going seven innings and allowing only one run. Outfielder Casey Koizumi, Cortney Arruda and Ryan Fukunaga connected on a gun down of a Mililani runner trying to get two bases which saved a run early in the game.  Hilo scored first in the third inning when Cade Uyetake came home on a fielder choice. Hilo made the routine defensive plays and exploded in the fifth inning scoring six runs. Hilo had 12 batters go up in the fifth. Cortney Arruda had a triple while Ryan Fukunaga, Casey Koizumi, and Cade Uyetake contributed RBI Singles. Casey Koizumi recorded 3 hits. Mililani pitcher Richard Mariano Jr. was tagged for the loss. Mililani used a total of four pitchers in trying to slow Hilo’s hitting. Richard Mariano had 2 hits while John Abreu was credited with the only Mililani RBI. Joey Estrella, Punahou Head Coach Craig Kadooka and Pearl City assistant coach Dennis Fukunaga were in attendance.

May 9, 2007: Kamehameha-Hawaii exploded out of the gates with a four run barrage in the first inning that helped them get in the Wally Yonamine Foundation HHSAA State Championship quarterfinals.  OIA second seed Kailua had to play catch up from there. The Warriors from the BIIF held Kailua’s attempt to put together a big inning and held on to win 5-3. Reece Alnas, Kolten Wong, Trysen Cosier and Kelii Kimi singled for Kamehameha in the first. Kailua’s usually solid defense failed to make some routine plays in that first adding fuel to the fire of Kamehameha’s hitting. Kelii Kimi was effective enough to garner the win. Kailua scored two runs in the third when Preston Nakata doubled and Kale Sumner singled in Zach Akamine. Nakata later scored on a wild pitch. Kimi, struggled in the fourth inning and seemed to be tiring. Kailua threatened in the fourth behind a Ryan Kinoshita double and a Preston Nakata walk.

However, Kimi got the next two batters to fly out. Kawika Cazimero came in relief in the 6th inning and pitched a solid two innings handcuffing the Surf riders. Blake Amaral, Trysen Cosier and Makana Cazimero each had two hits for the Warriors. Preston Nakata and Rob De Marsh each had 2 hits for Kailua. Kamehameha will play Maui Interscholastic League Champion St. Anthony next.

By HawaiiSportsPage.com

May 10, 2007:The Kamehameha-Hawaii Warriors started hot again for the second straight day with back to back monster doubles by Tyson Goo and Kolten Wong to get Kamehameha off to a first inning one run lead. But MIL champion St. Anthony answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead with an Aaron Uehara RBI single and a fielder’s choice. Kamehameha trailed until the third when they seized control again by scoring four runs on four Warrior hits. Trysen Cosier, Kelii Kimi, Tyson Goo,  provided the hits. St. Anthony scored another run in the third to pull within 5-3. However, Kamehameha-Hawaii piled on runs in innings four through six to make it 8-3. Blake Amaral went the distance for the win. St. Anthony hitters put the ball in play and were very good at hitting with two strikes. It appeared Amaral was on the verge of retiring many of the batters with two strikes only to be frustrated when the St. Anthony hitters hit the ball hard. Blake Amaral collected two hits while Tyson Goo garnered three hits for the Warriors. Warriors will move on to play in the feature semifinal night game against Punahou.
